Courses & Course Outlines

Learn more about managing your Courses here.

Written by Raashi Thakran

A Course in Bobbin organizes related Lessons into a structured learning program. Courses group Lessons by subject area and connect specific Students with their Tutors across multiple sessions.

Every Lesson in the system belongs to a Course, making it easy to track progress and maintain consistency across teaching sessions.

Note: Coming from TutorCruncher?

In TutorCruncher, we call Courses "Jobs". When Bobbin is added to a Job, then you will be able to access it through this system.

Creating a Course

From the left-hand navigation, select Courses, then click New course. Creating a Course is a three-step process.

1. Name, description and color

Give the Course a name (this is what Tutors, Students and Clients see everywhere in Bobbin) and an optional description of what it covers. Pick a color from the preset palette, or choose your own — this is the color the Course shows up as in the Course list and on the calendar.

2. Add Students and Tutors

Check the box next to each Student and Tutor you want on the Course — up to 50 of each. Once you check a Tutor, a permission dropdown appears next to their name; this sets what that Tutor can do on the Course (see Tutor permissions on a Course below). If you leave it alone, they get Full access, unless that Tutor has their own different default level set — in which case theirs is used instead.

3. Review and create

Check the summary of the name, description, Students and Tutor permissions, then click Create course.

Note:

  • A Course can have up to 50 Students and 50 Tutors.

  • You can change any of this later — see Editing or deleting a Course below.

Tutor permissions on a Course

Each Tutor on a Course has one of four permission levels. The same level covers both what they can do with Lessons on the Course and with the Course itself:

  • Full access — create, edit, delete and mark Lessons complete; edit the Course's details, change its roster, and delete the Course.

  • Add & edit — create, edit and delete Lessons (can't mark them complete); edit the Course's details, change its roster, and delete the Course.

  • Edit only — edit Lessons and the Course's details; can't change the roster or delete the Course.

  • Complete only — mark Lessons complete only; no rights over the Course itself.

A Tutor with none of these set has no scheduling permission on the Course at all. Because the level is set per Course, the same Tutor can have different access on different Courses — if one says an action is missing on a particular Course, that's usually why.

Removing a Tutor from a Course's roster genuinely revokes their access to it, including to Lessons on that Course they were previously teaching.

Setting a Tutor's default permission

Each Tutor has their own default course permission, set on their profile: go to Tutors, open the Tutor, and use the Default course permission panel to pick a level and click Save default. This is the level they get whenever they're newly added to a Course without an explicit level chosen — it does not change their permission on Courses they're already on.

Note: When you reopen an existing Course's Edit screen, check each Tutor's permission level before you save. Saving the People step writes the levels shown on it, so a level that isn't showing the Tutor's current setting will be overwritten.

Course Outline

The Course Outline gives every Course a structured plan: a set of modules, each broken down into topics that Tutors and Administrators can tick off as they are covered.

You can start from a curriculum-aligned AI-built plan (matched to a Subject, Key Stage and Exam Board), or have AI generate a free-form plan from the Course description.

Once the plan is in place, you can edit it, regenerate it, leave feedback on it, track Course coverage as topics are completed, and review a log of the changes made to it.

Creating a Course Outline

Open the Courses list

From the left-hand navigation, select Courses to see every Course in your organization.

Open a Course

Click the Course you want to plan. The Course detail page opens on the Course Outline tab. If no plan exists yet you will see two starting options:

  • Browse plans (curriculum-aligned templates)

  • Describe your own (free-form).

Browse curriculum-aligned plans

Click Browse plans to open the template browser. Use the Search, Subject, Key stage and Exam Board filters to narrow the list to the curriculum you want.

The browser opens on the plans for your organization's country, so those filters match that curriculum. To teach from another country's curriculum, use the Country picker to switch and the other filters update to match.

Curricula are available for England, the United States (including the ACT and SAT under Exam Boards), Ireland (Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate at Higher, Ordinary and Foundation level, plus primary maths, English and Irish) and Australia, from primary through to senior secondary.

Preview a template

Select a template from the left-hand list. Its modules, module descriptions and topics appear on the right so you can confirm it matches what you want to teach before committing.

Apply the template to the Course

Click Use this template. The template is copied onto the Course as the active Course Outline, and the page refreshes to show Course Coverage, the full list of modules and topics, Learning Outcomes and Prerequisites.

Mark topics as covered

Tick the checkbox next to a topic to mark it as covered. Covered topics are shown with a strikethrough.

Track Course coverage

The Course Coverage bar at the top of the outline updates automatically as topics are ticked, showing the percentage of topics covered and the count out of the total.

Open the outline actions menu

Click the More button (the three dots) on the Course Outline header to access History (a read-only log of the changes made to the outline) and Edit (modify the outline).

Edit the outline

Choose Edit to enter editing mode. You can rename modules, reorder them, edit their descriptions, add or remove topics, swap to a different template via Change template, or Cancel without saving. Click Save Changes when finished.

Leave feedback on the plan

Use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down buttons on the Course Outline header to record your view of the plan's quality. A short feedback dialog opens where you can optionally add a comment before clicking Submit feedback.

Note:

  • Course Outline is a beta feature. Curriculum-aligned plans are generated by AI against published Exam Board specifications - always review every module and topic before using with Students.

  • Both Tutors and Administrators can create, edit, regenerate and leave feedback on Course Outlines. Administrators always see every Course; Tutors see the Courses they teach.

  • Each Course has a single Course Outline, and your edits are made to it in place. Editing an AI-generated or template-based plan marks it as manually edited.

  • Regenerating a plan, or switching template with Change template, replaces the whole set of modules and topics — including anything you have edited, and including edits made by a colleague. Agree who is looking after an outline before making changes to it.

  • Learning Outcomes and Prerequisites are generated alongside the outline and shown beneath it. They have their own feedback controls.

  • The History menu item shows a read-only record of what changed and when. It's a log for reference rather than something you can roll back, so removed modules and topics can't be brought back from it.

Course resources

You can attach files and folders from your document library to a Course, so the material you teach from sits alongside the outline and is ready to open in the Lesson. Tutors can use your organization's shared files as well as their own library, and attach them to the Courses they teach.

Inside a live Lesson, the library panel gives the shared files, the Course's own files and the Tutor's personal library without leaving the whiteboard.

Assigned Lessons

You can see every Lesson linked to this Course under its Lessons tab.

When you create a Lesson from a Course, you can pre-select the objectives from the outline it should cover and have Bobbin draft the Lesson plan around them. After the Lesson, its insights can show which of those objectives were actually covered, grouped by module — a cross-check against what's been ticked off by hand rather than a replacement for it. Course Coverage still moves when someone ticks a topic.

Editing or deleting a Course

Open the Course and click Actions in the top-right corner.

  • Edit course opens the same three-step form used to create the Course, pre-filled with its current name, description, color and roster.

  • Delete course permanently deletes the Course. This can't be undone, and a Course can't be deleted once any of its Lessons has started.

Note: who can see a Course

  • Administrators see every Course in the organization.

  • Tutors see the Courses they're on.

  • Students see their own Courses.

  • Clients see the Courses for Students they're linked to.
