Running your Lesson in the classroom

Find out how to start your lesson, let students in and hand over the room.

Written by Raashi Thakran

Your Lessons happen in the Bobbin classroom. You start each Lesson yourself, let your Students in when you're ready, and hand the room over to the next Tutor when your Lesson is done.

You do all of this from the Lesson tools panel, which floats over the classroom. You can minimize it, and it opens again by itself when someone new asks to join.

If the panel is covering something on the whiteboard, click the small grid icon at the top of the panel and choose another corner. Bobbin remembers where you put it on that browser.

Starting your Lesson

The panel lists your Course's Lessons for the week, with the one due now first. Click Start next to the Lesson you're running. Bobbin uses the Lesson you start for attendance, the recording and your Lesson insights, so make sure you pick the right one.

While a Lesson is running, you can use Switch lesson or End lesson. Starting, switching or ending a Lesson reloads the classroom, and any Students already in it move along with you.

Your plan, last lesson and notes while you teach

Once your Lesson is running, the Lesson tools panel lists four things you can open without leaving the classroom. Each one takes over the panel; click the back arrow to return. If you have several Students, use the name tabs at the top to switch between them.

  • Lesson plan: this Lesson's objectives and plan. If there's no plan yet and AI is on for your Course or Lesson, you can add an optional brief and click Create a plan. Bobbin drafts one in about a minute.

  • Last lesson: the previous Lesson on the Course: its topic and date, what it covered, each Student's next steps (if your agency shows them), and your notes from it.

  • About the students: each Student's learning profile, if your agency uses learning profiles.

  • Notes: your notes on each Student for this Lesson. Write as you go and click Save note. These are the same notes you'd add on the Lesson's page afterwards, and the Student's Client sees them in the Lesson Report, so keep them suitable to share. You can still edit them before the report is sent.

Letting Students in

When a Student or parent opens their classroom link while you're in the room, they wait on a waiting page and appear under Waiting to join. Click Let in or Turn away for each person.

  • If Students are already in the classroom when you arrive, they move to your waiting list so you can let them in.

  • If your organization has Start a lesson before students join their tutor turned on, you'll need to start a Lesson before you can let anyone in. If you end a Lesson and stay in the room, your Students wait until you start the next one.

  • To remove someone from the room, use the whiteboard's own controls.

When another Tutor's Lesson is running

If you arrive for your Lesson and another Tutor's Lesson is still going, you'll see whose Lesson is in progress and can ask to take over the room. If they don't answer, the room is handed over to you automatically about a minute after they've seen your request, or once their Lesson's scheduled end time has passed.

If you're the one running the room, the request appears in your Lesson tools, with Hand over and Keep the classroom.

Adding resources from the library

The library inside the classroom has your agency's files, the Course's files and your own library, plus ready-made Math, Language, Science, Music and Other tabs. These include worksheets, diagrams, music notation, stickers and a few blank whiteboards and lesson plans. Search a tab to find what you need and add it straight to the whiteboard. Your Students don't see the library tabs.

Sharing your screen with sound

If your Students can't hear the sound from something you're sharing, like a video, share a Chrome tab rather than a window or your whole screen. Sound only comes through when you share a tab.

  1. Open the video or page in its own tab in Google Chrome.

  2. Click the screen-share icon in the classroom.

  3. Choose Chrome Tab, then pick the tab you want to show.

  4. Tick the box in the bottom-left corner to share the tab's audio.

  5. Click Share.

Attendance

Attendance counts from when you start the Lesson, so a Student who looked in early and left before you started isn't marked present. A Student who's in the Lesson for less than a minute is marked absent, but you can still mark them present if they were there.

You can also bring a second device, such as an iPad to write on, into your Lesson. See Using a second device in a Lesson.
