Homework

Learn how Tutors and Administrators set homework on a Course.

Written by Raashi Thakran

Tutors and Administrators can set homework on a Course, attach worksheets to it, and see who has handed it in. Students upload their work straight into Bobbin, so nothing needs to go back and forth by email or messaging apps.

Who can do what

  • Administrators can set, edit and delete homework on any Course, and see every Student's work.

  • Tutors can do the same on the Courses they teach, depending on their course permission level from TutorCruncher. Full access and Add & edit can set, edit and delete homework. Edit only can edit homework but not set or delete it. Complete only can see homework but not change it.

  • Students see the homework on their Courses and hand in their work from their own Homework page.

  • Clients (parents and other payers) can't see homework or anything a Student hands in.

Note: Students hand in by signing in to Bobbin, so they need their own login. A Student synced from TutorCruncher can set their Bobbin password by clicking Set your password on the login page and entering the email address their lesson emails go to. A Student with no email address can't sign in, so they can't hand homework in.

Setting homework

  1. Open the Course and go to the Homework tab.

  2. Click Set homework.

  3. Give it a Title so Students know which homework it is.

  4. Check the Due date and time. It starts at the beginning of the Course's next planned Lesson, or a week from today if there isn't one, and you can change it.

  5. Add any Instructions, for example what to do and what to hand in. This is optional.

  6. Under Files for students, add any worksheets or examples (optional):

    • Upload files to add a file from your computer.

    • Choose from resources to pick files already on the Course (This course) or in your own library (Your library).

  7. Click Set homework.

Homework is set for everyone on the Course, and Students can hand it in straight away. Files can be PNG, JPG, PDF, Word or PowerPoint.

Note: A file you upload while setting homework only belongs to that homework. It doesn't appear in anyone's library, and it's deleted if the homework is deleted. Files you pick from the Course or your library stay where they are.

Seeing who has handed in

The Homework tab leads with the latest homework, showing Handed in as a count (for example 3 of 5) and a list of the Course's Students. Each Student shows one of these:

  • Not yet: nothing handed in, and it isn't due yet

  • Not handed in: nothing handed in, and the due date has passed

  • Handed in: with the date and the files they uploaded

  • Handed in late: with how many days late it was

Use the download button next to a Student to save their work. Earlier homework is listed under Earlier homework. Click Open, or any homework's title, to see its page, where you can preview each Student's files.

Homework on a Lesson's page

Tutors and Administrators also see a Homework card on each Lesson's page. It pulls in the homework that's relevant to that Lesson, so the Tutor can follow it up without leaving the page.

On an upcoming Lesson, the card is labeled Before this lesson. It looks back at the homework the Students should have done by then: anything on the Course that was due in the 14 days before the Lesson starts, or later on the same day as the Lesson.

For example, for a Lesson on Thursday 20th November at 4pm, the card shows homework due between Thursday 6th November at 4pm and the end of Thursday 20th November. Homework due on 5th November is too old to show, and homework due on 21st November isn't due yet.

For each piece of homework, the card shows:

  • its title, which you can click to open it

  • when it was due and how many Students have handed it in, for example Due 18 Nov · 3 of 5 handed in (late hand-ins count)

  • who hasn't handed it in, for example Not handed in: Alex and Jordan. Only Students whose due date has passed are listed here, so anyone who still has time isn't named.

If nothing was due in that time, the card says so.

On a past Lesson, the card is labeled Set after this lesson and shows homework set in the 14 days after the Lesson started, with the same hand-in details.

The card shows up to three pieces of homework, the most recently due first. Click All homework to go to the Course's Homework tab for the rest.

Editing or deleting homework

Open the homework and click Edit to change its title, due date, instructions or files. Students see the changes straight away, and anything they've already handed in stays as it is.

To remove homework, open it and click Delete. Before anything is removed, Bobbin shows a pop-up listing exactly what will be deleted, and you confirm with Delete homework.

These are permanently deleted along with the homework:

  • Every Student's handed-in work - all the files Students uploaded for it.

  • Worksheets you uploaded straight onto the homework with Upload files. These only ever belonged to that homework, so they go with it.

Files you added with Choose from resources aren't deleted. They stay in the Course's Resources tab or your library, wherever you picked them from. Deleting the homework only removes them from it.

Deleting can't be undone, so download any Student work or worksheets you want to keep first. Deleting a Course also deletes all its homework and everything Students handed in for it.

How Students hand in their work

  1. The Student signs in to Bobbin and clicks Homework in the menu.

  2. Homework that's still to do is shown at the top, with anything overdue first. Each one shows the instructions and any worksheets to download.

  3. They drag their files onto Hand in your work, or click it to choose them. A photo or a PDF is fine.

  4. They click Hand in.

Students can see that only their Tutor and your organization's Administrators can see their work. Other Students on the Course can't.

What happens at the due date

  • Before the due date, a Student can add files to their hand-in or remove them as often as they like, up to 20 files.

  • After the due date, anything already handed in is locked. Neither the Student nor the Tutor can change it.

  • A Student who hasn't handed anything in by the due date can still hand in once afterwards. It's marked Handed in late.

If you move the due date, the rules follow the new date.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't a Student see their homework?
Check that they're signed in with their own Student login and that they're on the Course the homework was set on. A Student with no email address can't sign in, so add one to their record in TutorCruncher first.

Can a parent hand homework in for their child?
No. Homework and hand-ins are only visible to the Student, their Tutors and your Administrators, so the Student needs to sign in themselves.

A Student handed in the wrong file after the due date. Can it be changed?
No. Once the due date has passed, work that's been handed in is locked. If you need them to resubmit, set a new piece of homework, or move the due date later so their hand-in opens again.

Why can't I find a worksheet I uploaded to homework in my library?
Files uploaded while setting homework only live on that homework. To reuse a worksheet across several pieces of homework, add it to your library or the Course's resources first, then pick it with Choose from resources.

Why does a Tutor get an error when they try to set homework?
Their course permission level in TutorCruncher may not allow it. Setting and deleting homework needs Add & edit or Full access on the Course.
