Connecting Claude to Bobbin

Learn how to connect Claude and other AI assistants to your Bobbin data.

Written by Raashi Thakran

You can connect Claude, and similar AI assistants, to Bobbin so you can ask about your Courses, Lessons, Students and transcripts from inside the assistant. You connect by signing in to Bobbin and approving the connection, so there's no API key to copy.

Before you start

An Administrator needs to turn on Enable MCP server under Workspace > Settings > API. Until they do, nobody in the organization can connect an assistant.

Connecting an assistant is part of Bobbin's AI features, so it isn't available on Bobbin Lite.

Connecting the AI assistant

  1. In your assistant, add Bobbin's MCP server address as a custom connector.

  2. When asked, sign in to Bobbin.

  3. Check the details on the approval screen and approve the connection. The assistant is asked to read your Courses, Lessons, Students and transcripts.

What the assistant can see

A connection only ever sees what the person who approved it can see in Bobbin.

  • An Administrator's connection can read across the organization.

  • A Tutor's connection only sees that Tutor's own Courses, Lessons and transcripts.

A connection stays tied to the role it was approved as. If a Tutor is later made an Administrator, their existing connection still only sees what a Tutor sees. Clients and Students can't connect an assistant.

Using an API key instead

Some tools, such as Claude Code and Cursor, connect with an API key rather than by signing in. An API key isn't tied to a person: it reads everything your organization owns, so only use one where that's what you want.

  1. Go to Workspace > Settings > API and click Create key.

  2. In the API key created window, click Copy and store the key somewhere secure, then click Done. The key won't be shown again.

  3. Add Bobbin's MCP server address to your tool, with the key sent as Authorization: Bearer followed by your key.

Your keys are listed under API Keys, showing when each was created and last used. Only the start and end of each key are shown. Treat a key like a password: don't paste it into emails, chats or screenshots, and if one may have been shared, click Delete next to it and create a new one.

Note:

  • Disconnecting Bobbin in your assistant ends its access within the hour.

  • The connection is read-only. Your assistant can look things up in Bobbin but can't change anything.
